Er kwam een einde aan de mode van de strakke [[Formele tuin|formele tuinen]] die voorheen zo populair waren. Nieuwe ideeën over natuur en tuinkunst werden in de tweede helft van de achttiende eeuw uit Engeland overgebracht naar Nederland. Deze ideeën vormen samen de Engelse landschapsstijl. <br /> <br /> === Engelse landschapsstijl ===<br /> [[Bestand:Blauwestadhoeve voorzijde.jpg|miniatuur|Blauwestadhoeve met slingertuin]]<br /> De Engelse landschapsstijl is een tegenhanger van de Franse tuin, waarvan veel elementen te zien zijn in de [[formele tuin]]. Men wilde af van het idee dat de mens de natuur volledig moest beheersen. In plaats van symmetrie zocht men nu naar kronkelingen, doorkijkjes, en meanderende beken. Men legde parken aan met kunstmatige heuvels, niervormige vijvers en solitaire bomen. Ook in andere landen werd deze landschapsstijl al snel overgenomen. Aanvankelijk gebeurde dit vooral bij tuinen en parken rond buitenplaatsen. Later volgden ook de boeren die de tuinkunst van de grote huizen bekeken en de voortuinen op hun erf hierop aanpaste. Anders dan bij de klassieke nutstuin en de formele tuin, waar geen ontwerper aan te pas kwam, werden de tuinen in landschapsstijl ontworpen door een tuinarchitect. Hiervoor moest men zeer welvarend zijn, waardoor de parkachtige tuinen slechts voor een klein groepje rijke boeren weggelegd waren. <br /> <br /> ==== Slingertuinen ====<br /> Omdat dit type tuinen maar voor een zeer kleine selectie welvarende boeren voorbehouden was, vinden we ze vooral in bepaalde streken van Groningen waar aan het eind van de vorige eeuw de graanboeren gouden tijden kenden. Deze tuinen werden in Groningen [[Slingertuin|slingertuinen]] genoemd.
