In de loop van de tijd werden zij pachter voor elders wonende grootgrondbezitters (edellieden of kloostergemeenschappen). In de praktijk gingen deze pachters zich meer en meer als eigenaar gedragen. Met de verdeling van de markegronden in de tweede helft van de 19e eeuw wist deze bevoorrechte groep grote stukken van de pachtgronden in eigendom te verwerven. Als nieuwe boerenelite lieten zij voor zichzelf riante boerderijen bouwen. <br /> <br /> Hoewel de scholtenboeren vaak worden vergeleken met [[Herenboer|herenboeren]] in Groningen was de relatie tussen deze boeren en hun pachtwerkers of loonwerkers van een andere aard: &lt;blockquote&gt;De Groningse herenboeren hadden loonwerkers in dienst. De scholtenboeren hadden een andere relatie met hun pachtboeren. Vaak kenden de families elkaar al verschillende generaties. Ze hadden elkaar nodig.
